who? how? what? why? energy contact home demand side response is required to balance networks. but what is demand side response? demand side response is a method of reducing electricity consumption at times of peak demand on the grid, allowing system operators such as national grid uk to avoid using outdated, expensive and polluting, "peaking" power stations. our network of clients act as ‘virtual power stations’ aggregating load from their assets across multiple sites to either provide capacity back to the grid at peak times or to reduce grid stresses why is demand side response needed? within the next 10 years, the uk will lose 25% of its generating capacity as old coal and nuclear power stations are taken offline. by 2050 electricity demand is set to double as more transport, heating and devices are integrated onto existing energy grids. in the uk alone, over £110bn of investment is required to build the equivalent of 20 large power stations and upgrade the grid to meet growing demand. the uk’s national grid has committed to relying mostly on demand response to balance the grid by 2030 who epura specialise in demand response management, working with clients to develop programmes that are a strategic fit for their businesses. we recognise the sensitivity of operations on site and create bespoke demand management strategies for each client, delivering significant recurring revenues to large users of electricity and increased green credentials for the client. cost effective grid this also creates a more cost effective grid, reduces the need for inefficient backup power stations and provides balancing requirements and security of supply to system operators and commercial sites alike. contingency power and demand management we provide contingency power and demand management technical services including standby generation, process optimisation and smart metering. we work with clients to ensure successful performance during demand response events and provide on-site minute by minute monitoring displaying monthly performance and financial statements on the client app. how epura has made joining the scheme effortless. our experience and focus on demand response operations allow facilities to realise maximum revenues and additional benefits from participation. the process is completed over the following simple six steps: step one: kick-off meeting epura will meet with the site team to discuss how the facility may take part in demand response. step two: site energy usage analysis after acquiring information about electricity usage at site, epura’s team will estimate how much demand can be reduced and how much revenue can be generated from implementing a demand management strategy. step three: indicative proposal epura’s specialist team will provide an initial demand response management strategy. the strategy will be as effortless to implement as possible and have little or no impact on the day to day running of the business. step four: site audit epura engineers will visit the site, at no cost, to help assess the site’s full potential. they will examine all systems and generators to determine what additional equipment is necessary and how to optimise the site’s facilities. step five: full proposal and contract once a demand management strategy has been agreed upon, the business will entre in to a formal commercial relationship. participation is still at the sites discretion. step six: participation and payments upon implementation of the demand response strategy triggered by the national grid and by confirming participation by the on-site nominated contact, the client will generate new and recurring revenue at no cost or disruption to the business. payments are generally quarterly, itemising the revenue from each event. demand response services stor – (short term operating reserve) is national grid’s core programme for securing reserve on the national electricity network. our network of client’s act as a ‘virtual power station’ aggregating assets from multiple sites in order to reduce stress on the grid at peak times. on-site generators are enabled or assets are turned down on-site. 10 to 30 events a year lasting a maximum of two hours with 10 minutes’ notification time, 7am till 1pm and 2pm till 10:30pm programme windows. ffr – (fast frequency response) is a premium grid service and is offered to commercial and industrial clients to enable them to rebalance sudden changes in supply and demand which have a negative impact on grid frequency, normally 50.0hz. on-site generators are enabled or assets are turned down on-site. up to 15 events a year lasting a maximum of 30 minutes with 30 seconds notification time, 24hr programme availability as specified by client. tirad management – triad avoidance programmes for clients to reduce consumption during anticipated triad periods. clients can reduce demand or switch to on-site generation to achieve significant savings during these periods. three triad strategy’s, 100% prediction success for 2014/5, fully automated programme operating between 1st november to 29th february yearly. capacity market – designed to ensure adequate capacity over the coming years as we move to become more reliant on intermittent wind and inflexible nuclear generation. our network of client’s act as a ‘virtual power station’ aggregating load from assets across multiple sites to provide capacity back to the grid at peak times. up to 5 events a year lasting a maximum of four hours with 4 hours’ notification time, 24hr programme availability as specified by client. why participating in a demand response programme has significant benefits for the end users’ facilities far beyond just the revenues. during the site assessment process, we invest time and resources to understand the electrical profile of each site. through the installation of high end smart metering, control and communication hardware (all at no cost to the business) enables managers to identify further energy saving opportunities and operational energy usage can greatly improve emergency powers plans as part of the business continuity process. benefits: no up-front costs full control significant recurring revenues energy monitoring – minute by minute improved green credentials energy asset intelligence free asset maintenance no on-site disruption triad savings grid stabilisation hedging against energy cost increases procurement as a market leader in energy procurement, we able to offer your business professional and unbiased advice. a bespoke energy procurement strategy gives you total control over your energy purchasing, we offer a bespoke service for gas and electricity to ensure that each individual client’s expectations are met. whether it be a fixed price or more of a flexible approach, we will find a solution to suit your business’ requirements. there is also the option of joining a consortium to access additional savings. you will be able to discuss all options with one of our energy specialists and decide if you would be looking for stability with long-term fixed contracts or work on developing a risk management strategy in line with your business requirements. contact the best way to understand exactly what benefits demand response management can achieve and to see how easy it is to sign up, is to arrange a meeting with one of our engineers; alternatively, we can complete a desktop survey prior to the meeting to evaluate the potential revenue streams you could be generating. there’s no obligation and no cost, once we have had the meeting we will be able to tell very quickly if your site is able to join our network and experience the benefits demand response immediately. please call freephone on 0800
